Introduction
Subic Bay is located north of Manila in the island of Luzon. It was also the home to a former US Naval Base, said to be largest in South East Asia. The former US Naval Base is now a Special Economic Zone with several hotels for tourists and visitors. In addition, there is a marina/yatch club, casino, restaurants and many stores that sell duty-free items with in the Special Economic Zone.
Diving
Most if not all of the diving activities and sites in the area are wreck dives of World War II ships. The more accessible wrecks have been explored and wreck-diving courses have been set-up on those that are the safest to penetrate for divers with less experience. Visiblity is often poor, as a result of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo that has destroyed most of the coral.
Since the bay where most of the wrecks are located is sheltered, there a few currents. Although the coral life may be poor, the fish life is quite good. Occasionally, divers can catch a glimpse of some of the sea turtles that use the surrounding beaches to lay eggs. Diving is good all year round but the best visibility is from December to May.
