Dive Locations : Puerto Galera

Introduction

Puerto Galera is located 150 km. from the capital Manila in the island of Mindoro, which is to the south of Luzon. It is situated on a beautiful natural harbor with many fine beaches, sheltered coves and a back-drop of lush green hills.

Puerto Galera (Port of Galleons) is also billed as the "pearl of mindoro" and is an international travellers beach resort. Many expatriates have fallen in love with the place, married local girls and set-up their own accomodations and diving operations.

There are several beaches within walking distance of each other. The focal point is Poblacion (the town center), where the ferries dock. The busy heart is Sabang Beach, with its nightlife, discos and resorts. Small and Big La Laguna Beaches are slower-paced resort areas with nice beaches and better snorkelling.

Diving

The diving in Puerto Galera is famous for its diversity. There are dives for all level and standards, from easy dives for training and novices to current dives and deeps dives. The area is also noted for its good macrophotography opportunities but there are also plenty of larger subjects to photograph.

Diving is possible all year round with the best time being between March and October. There is also good snorkelling along most of the rocks from the eastern end of Sabang Beach to Escarceo Point. All dives are treated as drift dives, with the banca or "pumpboat" following your "bubbles".
