Introduction
Bohol is located to the west of Cebu and is accessible by both air (from Manila and Cebu) and sea (there are several ferries that operate between Bohol and Cebu). Bohol is known for its pristine white sand beaches and great diving attractions. The three main areas of interest to divers in Bohol are: Panglao Island/Alona Beach and Balicasag and Cabilao Islands.
Pangalao Island/Alona Beach: Located off the southwestern tip of Bohol, Panglao is a small coralline limestone island joined to the mainland near Tagbilaran by a causeway with connecting bridges. It is known for its quiet beach resorts. The best beach in the area in Alona Beach, a quiet and friendly place that remains attractive to families rather than those looking for a nightlife.
Balicasag Island: Located Southwest of Duljo Point with great diving areas and beaches.
Cabilao Island: Located to the Southwest of Pangangan Island. It is a 2 hr. banca ride from Mactan Island is Cebu.
Diving
Pangalao Island/Alona Beach: The diving is varied with good coral gardens near the surface which are also great for snorkelling, but the main attractions are teh steep walls with caves, overhangs and crevices harbouring teeming fish and invertebrate life. The small offshore islands are in strong currents so they too have large schools of fish and big pelagic species. Manta Rays, Hammerhead Sharks and even Whale Sharks can be seen here. The area can be dived all year round with the best season being between November to May.
Balicasag Island: The island can be considered a microcosm of some of the best diving in the Philippines. On the south side of the island there is a marine sanctuary, with vertical walls and string currents that host healthy marine life and plenty of pelagic visitors. Hammerhead Sharks, and even Whale Sharks can be seen here in December and Janaury.
Cabilao Island: This island is also known for some of the best diving in the Philippines. It is also famous for its sightings of Hammerhead Sharks in the deeper water of the northwest point. There are very strong currents in the area and caution must be taken when diving.
